Battery Croghan was a concrete gun battery on Fort San Jacinto, Galveston Island, Texas. The battery was named in Dec 1904 after Colonel George Croghan, U.S. Army. Battery construction started July 1899, was completed Jan 1900 at a cost of over $32K. While damaged in the 1900 Galveston hurricane, it was repaired, armed for use again in August 1911. Battery Croghan was deactivated in 1946 after serving Galvestonians well in the fight against German scouts during WWII.
As a boy in the 1960s, there was nothing more fun than to explore the remains of Battery Croghan! As the painting suggests, the last battle is not only with the elements of island weather, but also a fight against vandals leaving their mark on the fortress.
