The purgative way is the result of the first conversion, which is characterized by the transition from sin to a state of grace. Faith is a precursor to this stage and acceptance of Truth calms anxiety. This stage often arises from a crisis that causes the soul to withdraw from the world. The soul then rejects sin, purges itself of the desire for earthly possessions and focuses on the interior life. The lessons learned, and habits formed will be needed for the temptations and failures to come. However, with the continued Grace from the Holy Spirit in the form of Hope, the soul will proceed to the Illuminative Stage.
